Spring Forward! 10 Hygge-themed Spring Activities

by Laura Donnelly on March 29, 2022

Spring is here and I feel like I'm back again to my usual self. It is my favourite season for many reasons; the main one being its association with rebirth, renewal and regrowth. I feel like it's a fresh start in many ways for all species.

The first day of spring is called the Vernal Equinox. Vernal is the latin name for spring and equinox is the latin for 'equal night'. For many people, spring is seen as a chance for a fresh start. The warmer weather means increased physical energy and with this comes increased mental energy. As you put the winter woolies away, imagine yourself shedding not only the heaviness of the winter coats, hats and scarves but also the heaviness that the winter mood brought upon you. It's time to let the light in for optimism, a sense of renewal and a fresh perspective.

As it stays light for longer in spring, birds know it is time to find a mate so they sing to each other. Most wild herbivores have babies in the spring as this gives them the best chance of growing large, strong and helps them put on enough fat before the winter. The first spring flowers that we see are usually lilacs, irises, lilies, tulips, daffodils and dandelions. I was delighted, at the weekend, to see my garden already starting to bloom!

Spring flowers     spring flowers.

As we see the flowers bloom and nature starting to evolve, use this as a time for reinventing yourself and trying new things. Take the time to re-evaluate what no longer works for you in life and think about how you can grow, change and transform to be the best you.

We have all heard of a 'spring clean'. Along with cleaning out the cupboards and doing a full-on Mrs Hinch, spring is also a great time to spring clean your mind. It's a great time to focus on yourself and to rid yourself of negative self-talk, self-doubt and the inner critic within. The freshness and newness of spring can serve as a great inspiration to heal any resentments. As you bask in the warmth and beauty of spring, allow yourself the time to heal prior hurts and replace bitterness with forgiveness and acceptance.

Spring forward! Use the milder weather and longer days to be active and have fun. Join others in outdoor activities such as biking, running and walking around the beautiful countryside, lakes, towns and beaches that we are fortunate to have in our country. Being active not only makes you physically fit but mentally fit too.

10 Hygge-themed Spring Activities

  1. Go stargazing. On a clear night, lie flat on your back and watch the sky glitter with stars. This is a great time for families to share the magic of the night sky
  2. Discover what's in a pond. Can you see any tiny tadpoles growing under the transparent bubbles?
  3. Go swimming in the sea. Wake up the senses by taking a refreshing dip in the sea and feel the gentle waves breaking against your back
  4. Create a nature-themed scavenger hunt
  5. Get up early and watch the sunrise
  6. Visit a farmer's market
  7. Have a garden tea-party
  8. Cloud-gaze and make shapes with your imagination
  9. Make a spring-themed playlist of your favourite, uplifting songs
  10. Sketch some nature (and it doesn't matter if you believe yourself to be a good artist or not!).
